Hi,
I am Helene with Hawaii Happy Cats. We care and help with few cat colonies on the East Side and in town. Park & Ride Hawaii Kai Colony is one of the colonies that we help. All Cat people know all about the abandonments that go on there daily and Park & Ride Kitties are always under scrutiny.
It is very nice to know that there is a cat forum where we can connect. I really believe that all cat caregivers have Big Heart and we have one thing in common, our Big Love for our Homeless and Abandoned Kitties.
About the Panleukopenia outbreak in Maui, I heard in the old days, this virus is used for BioControl of feral cats. Whether it is true or not, it is a good time to vaccinate our homeless kitties.
I am thinking out loud, when we bring our feral cats in for surgery, is it possible that we can pay a little extra fee and get the cats vaccinated at that time or it is not good for the surgery and the vaccination to happen at the same time?
Please give me more information on this issue. It is just a matter of time before some one will introduce this virus to Park & Ride Hawaii Kai.
Thank you for your help and kindness towards homeless cats,
Helene

Hi. As far as I know you shouldn't vaccinate and spay/neuter at the same time because it stresses their immune system too much. Especially risky for the feral cats since they usually don't undergo a blood workup prior to surgery so there could be underlying medical issues with the cat. I used to work as a vet tech so I know some of the reasoning behind it. Hope this helps.
